<description>I&#039;d like to recommend adding Partners in Health to your list of aid agencies for Haiti.

Dr. Paul Farmer, the founder of Partners in Health, was featured in Tracy Kidder&#039;s book &quot;Mountains Beyond Mountains&quot;. PIH has health facilities in Haiti and has been there for over 20 years. They have an excellent record for working in full partnership with the local populace.

Their Stand with Haiti campaign, focused on the current crisis, can be access here:
http://www.standwithhaiti.org/haiti

While not set up as an emergency aid agency, they are ramping up to provide needed services. I think it is important, especially as time goes on, to have those services provided in a way that augments, re-enforces and expands local efforts rather than something that has its structure imposed from abroad.

I have heard Dr. Farmer speak, and spoke to him personally (with a Maasai friend). I admire the way that he respects local people and incorporates training, hiring, and utilizing the knowledge and skills of local people as part of his goals. I believe that this community based model is the best hope for long term success in Haiti.
