		<description>IIRC, Laurie Garrett had part of a chapter on intercontinental cholera transmission in her book &quot;The Coming Plague&quot;.  Apparently the bacteria can survive in the oceans long enough to be picked up by shellfish (mollusks) and get re-transmitted to new human hosts in other countries.

So, cook your seafood, folks.</description>

		<description>I would be interested in knowing how often cholera &quot;crosses borders&quot; annually. Is the transmission of V. cholerae from one country to another a rare event? Does it happen a few times a year? Or does it happen on a regular basis, and we don&#039;t hear about it because it is introduced into countries where proper medical care and sanitation stop it in its tracks? If the latter, then it underlines the fact that the conditions in Haiti are indeed the real issue.</description>
