In my opinion the largest threat for California are cataclysms and ecological catastrophes. Not important is how many money we have because one tragedy can us take all.

"Their skills are even more impressive..." Hmph. Grinning bottlenosed freaks. They have a lifetime of years to learn. Could be imitation, or even local enhancement, with those time scales. Too bad cuttlefish are so short-lived, or we would be reading articles on how these intelligent cephalopods gang up to trap, kill, skin, fillet, and enjoy "Flipper flambe". Now, that would be the perfect cuttlefish meal!
http://digitalcuttlefish.blogspot.com/2009/01/perfect-cuttlefish-meal-or-perhaps-not.html
A dolphin may wish
For a cuttlefish dish
In the waters with old Davy Jones;
See, they find cuttlefishes
Are truly delicious
Except for the cuttlefish bones.
They also may think
That the cuttlefish ink
Is unpleasant, or nasty, or mean;
We infer this because
In a Gulf in South Oz
They’ve developed a dolphin cuisine!

The question I was wondering in my post, was whether learned behavior such as this is passed on by passive observance or by active teaching.

Well dolphins certainly do learn behaviours from each other (see the article I linked to at the end about sponging behaviour). In this case, it's hard to say given that the behaviour's only ever been properly observed in one individual.

It would be interesting to know how the dolphins learn this technique. Does each individual discover it independently through trial and error, do they learn from observing others (parents?), or is it purposefully taught?
