The jaw muscle thing has legs when applied to non-neoceratopsian ceratopsids. Dodson covers this topic pretty well in his excellet book "The Horned Dinosaurs." To have jaw muscles cover the vast expanse of empty space in a frill as large as Chasmosaurus or Penataceratops seems unlikely. Apart from that, Triceratops has a totally solid frill, a unique feature to ceratopsids, with no windows AT ALL for jaw muscle attachment. It must have been attaching them somewhere else, of course, but the frills of neoceratopsid dinosaurs were probably not used for the jaw muscles.

Yes that too - sorry, the authors mention that in the paper, but I forgot to in the post. Probably a combination of defence and muscle attachment. Nice spot.

I was under the impression that ceratopsian frills first evolved as an anchor place for the powerful jaw muscles that were required to munch through the tough vegetation available at the time.
But I'll admit that that image of dueling Triceratops does make me feel a little giddy.

Sweet. Triceratops was my favorite when I was a child, and as I read through this I realize that now, even with childhood far behind me, it's still the case. Thanks.
