Singaporean spiders spit venomous glue, work together, eat each other

Blogging on Peer-Reviewed ResearchIn the forests of Singapore lives a spider that must be an arachnophobe’s worst nightmare. Most species are solitary hunters subdue their prey with venomous fangs, sticky silken webs or a combination of the two. But Scytodes uses a third trick – it spits a sticky, venomous fluid from its fangs that both traps its victims and poisons them (see video of related species). And it does this in packs – after hatching, spiderlings spend their early lives on their home web and they spit at, bite and devour prey en masse.

There are actually about 200 species of spitting spiders belonging to the genus Scytodes, and the specific species I’m talking about here was previously classified as Scytodes pallida. But Laura Yap, a student from the National University of Singapore, believes that it may be a new species entirely. For the moment, she refers to it simply as “Scytodes sp“, and she has provided the first thorough description of its behaviour.

But Scytodes also has a tender side, with mothers caring for their spiderlings before and after hatching. By collecting colonies throughout Singapore, Yap found that the vast majority consisted of either single adults or a mother and her young brood. After laying her eggs in a silken case, the mother carries them around in two of her limbs until they hatch (see below). That process depends on her, for the babies can’t break out of the tough egg sac unless he makes a cut in it first. Once they’ve emerged, they stay with her for several weeks, and finally leave the web just before they mature.

On their own, the spiderlings are entirely capable of spinning webs and killing prey, but they suppress their hunting instincts in mum’s presence to let her do the work. She traps flies with her venomous spit and either leaves them on the web or drags them back to it. There, the spiderlings consume the meal together, often with mum at the table too.  She never fights her young for food and she never spits at them.

The spiderlings themselves aren’t quite so selfless. They’ll happily share food that mum brings over, and once they reach a month in age, they will cooperate in groups of four or more to bring down flies much larger than themselves. But anything small that they kill on their own belongs to them, and they defend it accordingly.

The older they get, the more their cooperative streak fades. They become more likely to leave home, but also more likely to try their luck at cannabilism. The babies will turn on each other even if their mother is around and even if they have plentiful other sources of food. Indeed, the main cause of death among the spiderlings is each other. After six weeks, about a quarter of the babies have perished at the fangs of their siblings.

While all Scytodes species spit, only a few do so cooperatively. In fact, only about 40 of the 40,000 or so species of spiders are truly sociable. The species that Yap studied is a “subsocial” one, meaning that it hasn’t reached the same social state as ants, bees and termites, with their large colonies and castes of workers. They only form colonies because youngsters stay with their mothers after hatching.

It’s thought that this type of behaviour can evolve into the truly social lifestyles, akin to those of ants, by mothers caring for older and older offspring. Other species of social spitting spiders should provide a good testing ground for this idea.

A gallery of incredible spiders

There are around 40,000 species of spiders and they have a range of incredible adaptations to hunt their prey, move about and defend themselves. This gallery explores their behaviour, from vegetarian spiders to venomless ones that crush their prey to social ones that spit venom. Arachnophobes beware. <br /><p>Most spiders kill with venom, but the <a href="http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/notrocketscience/2008/07/03/the-spider-that-crushes-its-prey-with-140-metres-of-webbing/">uloborid spiders</a> (such as <em>Philoponella vicina</em>) have lost their venom glands entirely. Instead, they kill their prey by using their silk as a murderous garbage-compactor. Once an insect lands in a <em>P.vicina </em>web, the spider rushes over and starts wrapping. It uses 10-20 lines of silk at once and cocoons its prey in over 140 <em>metres </em>of the stuff. This silken shroud compresses insects with such force that it breaks their legs, buckles their eyes, and crushes their internal organs. It weaves its gargantuan trap over entire rivers and lakes. The main thread can be as long as 25 metres and the sticky core can be as large as 2.8 square metres. Darwin’s bark spider also uses the toughest silk of any species. It’s twice as elastic as any other spider silk and it can resist 10 times more force than Kevlar before rupturing. It’s not just the apex of spider silk – it’s the toughest biological material ever found.</p>

It’s a jumping spider that impersonates ants. It certainly looks the part, but it boosts the illusion with a social streak. To mimic the large societies of ants, the ant-spider travels in groups and lives in silken apartment complexes, with hundreds of individuals staying in nests connected by silk. This act protects the ant-spider from larger spiders that might eat it. It also allows the ant-spider to <a href="http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/notrocketscience/2009/07/01/spider-mimics-ant-to-eat-spiders-and-avoid-being-eaten-by-spiders/">raid the nests of those same larger spiders</a>. The would-be predators run away and abandon their eggs and youngsters to the charlatans. The ant-spider is a spider that looks like an ant to avoid being eaten by spiders so that it itself can eat spiders.</p>

It’s after mosquitoes that have fed on mammal blood. <em>Evarcha </em>specifically targets malarial mosquitoes that have just fed on blood, and it can tell them apart from other similar insects using its keen senses of vision and smell. <em>Evarcha</em> also sniffs its way to places where mosquitoes are likely to gather and it’s bizarrely drawn to the smell of human feet. Once it feeds, the blood doesn’t just nourish the spider – it’s also an aphrodisiac. The Beltian bodies make up the majority of its diet, but no one knows how <em>B.kiplingi </em>copes with them. They’re high in fibre and spiders cannot chew their food; they only “drink” prey that has already been liquefied by their venom.</p>

But tarantulas can also secrete silk from their feet. They use this unique skill to help them climb, bolstering the gripping abilities of their claws and leg hairs. That’s important for tarantulas – they include the largest of all spiders and they would be killed by falls that smaller species would shrug off. If they start to slip, small spigots on their feet secrete lines of silk to help them retain their grip. The basic design consists of a horizontal sheet with vertical lines underneath, stuck to the floor with blobs of glue. These threads are incredibly taut. If an insect blunders into them, they break, stick to the insect and catapult it into mid-air, where the spider can kill it leisurely. This structure is only woven by hungry spiders. Well-fed ones spin a more chaotic tangle of non-stick threads. It’s a completely different design and akin to a silken fortress, providing the spider with better defences when it has already ensnared its fill of food. The black widows might even change the architecture of their lairs to stop themselves from overeating.</p>

As a result, the diving bell spider can stay inside for a full day before needing to top up its air supply.</p>

    I thought spitting was forbidden in Singapore! Maybe only chewing (gum) and spitting, which spiders can’t do.
    Its funny than cephalopods squirt ink but not venom, since fish are easily stunned by chemicals in the water. Jellyfish have their long stinger tentacles, but no octopus with stinging tentacles.

    Ddeden – my Twitter followers tell me that the blue-ringed octopus can indeed squirt venom into the water around it.
    Zach – one theory I’ve read about naked mole rat sociality says that their food contributed to it. They eat large underground tubers that are very difficult to find but can provide sustenance for many individuals when they do. Makes it worthwhile to cooperate with one another.

    Never really saw any when I lived in Singapore.. started thinking there werent any, but I suppose the forest is fairly big and I never really ventured there in fear of being shot :)

    I hate spiders!
    The thought that a spider works together with other relatives and can not only catch you in its web but spits at you as well is a very terrifying thought.
