These hammer-heads are to me another clear example of adaptation by natural selection, and if the ultimate explanation for the bizarro morphology involves multiple functional improvements, so much the better. I think I have also heard that separating the nostrils may give them a more directional olfactory sense, useful for following scent plumes upcurrent.
