This technique is commendable, however the “ultimate vision” of stem cell application has been realized at the University of Minnesota according to:

where Angela Panoskaltsis-Mortari and Andrew Price among others have successfully seeded a rat lung scaffold with stem cells from another rat to produce working lungs (albeit with the help of an incubator).

Stem cell regeneration techniques are becoming a reality, instead of only a “vision”.

It’s quite strange watching the video of the lungs inflating and deflating in the medium, I get a horrible urge to shout “It’s Alive” in my best Colin Clive accent;-)

Very interesting work though, could really increase the availability of lungs for transplant.
