Audio recordings are enough to cut down on mis-quotations, and are easy to provide.

Yeah, all journalists should have to file their transcripts as supplementary materials!

I plan on recording people for my skepticism/science group (and blog), and the idea that I had was that upon conclusion of the interview - I could plug my digital audio recorder into the interviewee's laptop/computer and give them a copy of the audio file of the interview.

This could be for their protection in case I misquoted or took something out of context (but that won't happen), and also it gives them the audio file to do with as they wish. Ultimately, it's giving something back to them for their time.

great idea, wish i'd done it, especially because zoe is a v good interviewer

there are cheap transcription services from abroad, like the ones many NHS trusts use, voxie does it it as an iphone app, but it's a penny a word, andy baio from waxy did it through mechanical turk a while ago, if you're okay with exploiting price differentials with international labour

@ TR Gregory - Much as I'd love this to be par for the course, I think it's unrealistic to expect it. The main answer to your "why not" question is time - as Mark said, transcribing is labour-intensive. VERY labour-intensive. It's easier for features because I transcribe anyway, so it's little extra effort, but it would be much more difficult for news. This is why I'm suggesting that interviewees can take the lead themselves. Everyone can self-publish after all.

@ Mark - "If only someone would invent a reliable computerised transcription service! Or if there is one, please let me know!" I think they're called "interns". ;-)

Thanks for doing this, Ed. I'm really in favour of transcripts where possible -- the rate-limiting step is the actual transcribing... My rule of thumb is making the transcript takes 2.5 times the length of the tape.

I like it -- why not have electronic appendices (transcripts or mp3s) of all interviews for science news stories? Should be very simple to implement, and would cut down a lot on misquotation. Please enforce this within the science writer community, Sir.
