Very cool story, Ed. Parasitic flatworms of snails have been pretty well studied (at least I thought so) because of their health and economic importance. I'm amazed this has just been discovered now. I guess slides are no substitute for looking at living organisms.

The snail is effectively irrelevant. It's a bag of meat that serves only as a shell for its parasites. Remember that at the height of infection, almost half of its body is made up of parasites and it has been castrated. It has no more say in its future than a car does in where it goes.

Woa, queens and soldiers in parasitic flatworms, I would have never expected that! Nature always surprises me, no matter how much I learn about it
What an example of kin selection - and just a few days after Nowak and Wilson's attempt (failed attempt, I think) to demolish it

The colony lives together for years, driving around their snail vehicle.

Why does this make me think of "A Night at the Roxbury"? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9L3uE3xKnt0
