To Ed Yong and others interested in:
Really, all the article above is a little misinformation. The paper (pdf file) that you write about is accessible under the address: http://www.app.pan.pl/archive/published/app45/app45-151.pdf ; see pages 185-191
Prorotodactylus new ichnogenus and ichnospecies (P. mirus) representing new ichnofamily Prorotodactylidae was described at first not now by Brusatte and his team, but by Ptaszyński (in Poland, in Acta Palaeontologica Polonica) ten years earlier. Also the supposition concerning its dinosaur-like trackmaker affinity was discussed there, even in the abstract. (But see the page 191).

Yeah, a couple of things about that:

- No one knows what species created the tracks. "Protodactylus" is an 'ichnospecies' - it's one that's assigned to a consistently shaped set of tracks or other indirect markers. Brian Switek gets the subtlety when he describes the photo that the BBC used as "the dinosauromorph that may have made the Protodactylus tracks": http://blogs.smithsonianmag.com/dinosaur/2010/10/06/earth%E2%80%99s-worst-extinction-may-have-been-key-to-dinosaur-origins/
- Not all the Polish tracks were made by Protodactylus; there are other ichnospecies documented too.
- I'm pretty sure (but don't have the paper in front of me) that this is not the first time that Protodactylus has been named.

For anyone curious, this BBC story— http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-11481232 — gives the dinosauromorphs the species name Prorotodactylus.

Hmm, I like it, it's like a reboot every so often. I wonder what will show up when we're no longer in the way?
