		<description>There&#039;s something I don&#039;t understand here.  The predators, they react immediately.  If the repellent mechanism were simply to block the gills, one would think the predator would have seconds to minutes to clear their gills.  More than enough time to eat the hagfish.

Instead it looks like the slime is an irritant, a toxin, or something actively repelling the predator.  Yes?</description>
