How does this bit work?

'stem cells taken from Beyene’s bone marrow...can develop into every type of cell in the body'

I thought stem cells from adult bone marrow were restricted to certain cell lineages? They're multipotent rather than pluripotent stem cells, aren't they? Or have I misunderstood?

Christopher Lyles passed away this morning. I don't know from what degree, but he fell ill shortly after returning home to the US. Please keep his family and especially his lil girl in your prayers.

Great summary of the field Ed. It's one we've visited a few times over the past few years on the Speaking of Research blog, once in response to your earlier post on lab-engineered lungs http://speakingofresearch.com/2010/06/25/how-to-build-a-lung/

Having said that I have to admit my first thought on seeing this post was "Operation! I haven't played that in years...do they still make it?"
