The anti-vaxxers have already jumped on this. I noticed an editor was trying to use this publication to add to one of the anti-vaccine articles on Wikipedia. Since there is absolutely no evidence supporting the anti-vaxxers they’ll be using it for the next four or five years.

I am under the impression that children are inoculated with a nonviable polio vaccine before they are given the live virus. That change was made to prevent the one in 750,000 chance of getting polio.

Incredible. Animals do need to be vaccinated and treated medically, but it’s so scary to hear when these procedures go wrong.

Note that in the US, they call facial herpes cold sores, so that Americans always think of genital herpes when they read or hear “herpes”

Don’t the 3 strains in the Sabin Polio vaccine (OPV) all have the same Mutation in the IRES stem loop 5, which makes them non-neurotrophic?

Nice article Ed and good pointing out the human side of the story especially concerning the MMR. The measles and mumps viruses don’t recombine with each other nor do they recombine with other measles or mumps viruses, wild or vaccine. For some reason these viruses are incredibly rubbish at recombination.

definite nitpick, but the first sentence in the 6th paragraph reads oddly to me (“But Nobilis the only culprit”). possibly a dropped verb?

otherwise, excellent article. and thank you for covering human risks as well, before the anti-vaccers get their hands on this.

It will get misreported unfortunately. Those who think Big Pharma is hiding the dangers of human vaccines will point to this study and claim vindication. Pharma can cover up and pay off all those scientists to hide human health effects, but they couldn’t keep the chicken story down for some reason. A brave lone maverick scientist stood up against all the peer-pressure and all the reports that say that vaccines had nothing to do with this outbreak and reported this story anyway, which was published in a top tier journal despite all the combined might of Big Pharma and hundreds of other scientists saying it was junk science and couldn’t be published in the ‘pal-review’ system…..

In reality, this seems to be a good example of how science works. No conspiracy, no cover-ups, no suppression of unpopular findings, and work done well enough by a team of scientists to be published in a peer-reviewed journal (and a top one at that).

Excellently and interestingly written Ed.

And very well handled on looking at the human risks. I could easily imagine this aspect getting mis-reported and the human risks exagerated well beyond their reality. Hopefully not though.
