" Greenwood thinks that the virus probably jumped into Jerka from Wuppertal’s zebras, but it’s not clear how this happened since the zebras live 68 metres away from the bears and never came into direct contact. Maybe the zookeepers ferried the virus between them, or perhaps rodents did by sneaking in and out of the two enclosures."

Or they were transmitted the good old fashioned way. The zebras and polar bears have been getting freaky after the zoo closes I bet.

Zoos also create an interest in animals for the youth of countries, so it's a double edged sword. If there weren't zoos, or other formats that people are able to observe animals, either naturally (conservation) or artificially (zoos), then people, children, youths, young adults, would likely have little interest in them, their habitats, or preserving them. Which would lead to more species going extinct.

So until humans are able to live in complete harmony with nature (which is impossible at this point) and feel grateful for what we already possess (also not happening) then a select of us will continue to strive to educate the masses, in which a zoo is one of the better formats.

The SIN of humanity's Babylon and fowling of nature. Those viruses would have never have exposed2 or mutated to latch onto bears if not for humanity's need to gather global animals species and put them into a pot for our ogling pity guilt and entertainment fascination while they go extinct due to humans ruining nature. Extinct animal species biomass is disappearing in equal amount to human biomass spewed out in human babies worldwide demanding more unsustainable resources. Nature has become unstable HUMAN NATURE replacing/repopulating the crevasses of ecological niches pushing out diversity. Virus morphology has evolved into walking talking sapiency group think using the Human animal.
