"The F word" LOL! Good one by Barbara King. I think it would be fun to compare the titles of these media hype "science" stories to the actual published literature. Unfortunately it's nearly impossible most days to even find a link within a BBC or NY Times article. I'm sure most people will just read the headlines, scan the story then later I'll hear in the supermarket "did you read that birds even hold funerals?"

Sigh.

I agree about avoiding words like crazy and nutjob. However, like other "disabilities", I think all of us have brain quirks of some kind or another. The point is, I do sometimes describe our neighbors as sociopaths or crazy. It's nothing to do with mentally ill people in general. It's just that anyone who throws panes of glass out of a second floor window onto the sidewalk or allows their aggressive dogs to run loose has a serious problem. And it's pathological. This goes beyond being a jerk. If we want to intergrate the "disabled" into a society where all of us have some sort of disability, we should be allowed to call out certain harmful behaviors as pathological and abnormal.

Hi Ed - your missing links are my favorite weekend reading. I have a general question though. Is it possible to subscribe to individual blogs on the Discover network (on Google Reader and such) without subscribing to ALL the Discover blogs? I don't have time to read all of them and don't want them filling up my reader, and as a result I don't have any of them in there :( Sorry if this has a super obvious solution.
