Mr. Revkin, please tell the truth. All of the predictions from 20 years ago are VERY VERY wrong. Please, Revkin, tell us ONE thing that Hansen properly predicted (aside from the public resistance to obey the brilliant scientists).

“In a nutshell, theoretical models cannot explain what we observe in the geological record,” says oceanographer Gerald Dickens, study co-author and professor of Earth Science at Rice University in Houston. “There appears to be something fundamentally wrong with the way temperature and carbon are linked in climate models.”

Joseph Goebbels was a piker compared to Hansen when it comes to spinning the truth. The simple fact is that the 1988 predictions were horrible and have been falsified by the real world observations. The observed temperature increase was much lower than predicted and we are now looking at a cooling trend even though CO2 emissions have increased. Contrary to Hansen’s claim hurricane activity has not increased and even the IPCC disagrees with Hansen’s sea level claims.

This is the same guy who was telling us in 1971 that we were facing an inevitable ice age. Given that he never apologized for getting that one wrong it is not surprising to see him deny that he was wrong once again.

Strange no one has bothered to actually go back and look at the predictions Hansen made in his 1988 testimony?

The last page of his prepared remarks had a historical time-series of global mean temperature through 1987, plus predictions for various scenarios through 2019.

Well, we have 20 more years of data now – how do his predictions look so far? Wildly wrong.

Yes, great interview, very interesting perspective 20 years down THE ROAD. It’s amazing that Revkin was writing about all this in 1988…….long before most of us really took the threat seriously. Now it’s 2008. What will the world look like in 3008? If we don’t take action now?

Great interview. Moments of reflection are often lost in the ever-growing number of climate change reports, so it is particularly interesting to hear the thoughts of journalist who has watched the evolution of the debate for over two decades. I particularly appreciate Revkin’s candor regarding the asymmetric effects of climate change – an aspect of the issue that is often ignored.
