Let me make sure I understand this issue.

Disney hires employees (cast members), believing they will behave in a safe and responsible manner around guests. They are entrusting cast members with the reputation of the company. They have taken the time interview these people. They know them. These people cannot have guns in their vehicles on Disney parking lots.

But Disney has no clue to the mental stability or malevolent intensions of the guests visiting the parks or staying in on property. These people can have guns in their vehicles on Disney parking lots.

To wrap up; the people Disney know cannot have guns, the people Disney do not know can have guns. That makes sense.

I wonder if all 60,000 employees get checked on a daily basis? What was Disney up to before the law was enacted? I think this 13 year employee has been checked out by Disney and it has been shown that he is a responsible citizen, responsible employee dedicated to his job. The process we all go through to acquire the permits so we can defend ourselves is very thorough and shows that we are reponsoble when it comes to good judgement in the use of a firearm along with showing that we are not the criminals. Disney must believe or is afraid of law abiding citizens. Especially since they set up their fireworks displays in the parking lot.

Mr. Sotomayer I just wanted to say that I admire your standing by your principles and I'm sorry that it cost you a job you loved and had for almost 14 years. Given the many times I've been to Disney World with the family(I live in Florida) I'd probably know you on sight. If the informal polls taken in the media and the comments here are any indication, most people are with you. It isn't too often that one man can make such a big difference in people's lives. I think you are in the position to do just that.
God bless, Good luck and keep going.

I think there is an underlying issue here that few people if any have asked about.

Why should a business owner have the “right” to search an employees vehicle for anything if it is parked in a publicly accessible parking lot? That vehicle is the private property of the employee. Do businesses only claim the “right” to search employees vehicles or do they claim the “right” to search anyone’s vehicle including customers? How many have signs at the entrances to publicly accessible parking lots stating that all vehicles entering the parking lots are subject to search? Where is the line drawn? Do employers claim the “right” to strip search employees at will?

I imagine many employers would be thrilled to be able to “search employees vehicles for firearms” at will. You can bet that if they just happen to run across union organizing material, that employee will be fired for some reason. I would imagine that with some employers the same would hold true for political material they disagree with.

An employer should not have the “right” to search an employees vehicle for anything at all if it is parked in a publicly accessible parking lot unless there is a law enforcement officer present with a warrant.

One last question. If a business owner claims the “right” to search any vehicle parked on a publicly accessible parking lot because it is their property, should they then have the responsibility for any damage to the vehicle or for anything that happens to a customer or employee on that property?

Hi everybody, My name is Edwin Sotomayor as you might already know I am the Security Officer who was recently suspended and ultimately terminated from Walt Disney World for bringing a legal firearm to work while carrying a valid State of Florida Concealed Weapon Permit. I am a law abiding citizen and under a new enacted law, now private employees are allowed to take their firearms in their personal vehicles to work as long as the firearm remains inside a parked and locked vehicle.

Some people think that I was wrong about doing this, but Disney does not protect me during my commute to and from work. When I say I loved my job I meant to say I loved my Disney family, but apparently Disney does not appreciate me after my 13 ½ years of hard work & dedication. During my time at the Animal Kingdom Park I was part of a Safety Committee Team and I constantly interacted with Safety Management due to employee & guest concerns. I care about people, I care about my co-workers and I care about safety. Disney in on hand says “we are concerned about our cast & guest safety”, but the in the other hand if it requires money to fix the safety issue… they say “Disneyland we have a problem” or the issue gets ignored and never resolved, unless someone gets injured or killed. In fact more people at Disney have been injured or have died due to ride mechanical malfunctions or mechanical structures at Disney and as far as I know “no one” has ever died or been injured on the hands of a current employee with a handgun.

I care about the safety of those who surrounded me on a daily basis and I believe that the only way to make any employer feel comfortable with this new law is for me to create awareness and make them understand that we (CWP holders) are not career criminals. We just want to go to work with a privilege that would enable us to feel safe outside of Disney and will help us promote life after Disney. Death is not an option when it comes to safety...

When a citizen takes time to apply for a Concealed Weapons Permit in Florida, this individual does in fact go through a legal process that unusually takes up to 90 days to complete. That process includes a criminal & FBI background check, the submittal of a fingerprints via card or a process called livescan and a picture, Do you see career criminals doing this… Do you? Having a Concealed Weapons permit in Florida is not a right is a privilege. The State of Florida has the legal ability grant or deny this privilege while an application is being processed.

For those who don’t believe in the right to keep and bear arms… I have one question for you… How many CWP holders in Florida do you know that have been subject of criminal prosecution or have committed a violent crime while in possession of this permit? I am assuming that you know about a few Florida cases, but if you consider how many times a criminal does something wrong against how many times a CWP holder does something wrong, the difference is huge. An advantage about a registered CWP is that the Law Enforcement Community can easily locate you as a CWP holder and not a career criminal. Do you think that a CWP holder does not think about this, knowing how easy he or she can be located? Career criminals don’t care...

Not everybody that is employed at Disney, not everybody that belongs to the Chamber of Commerce or the Florida Retail Association believes in the lawsuit to overturn the new state law regarding employees and their right to keep and bear arms while at work. That said I would like to encourage those businesses to sit down and carefully think about their actions against the law abiding citizen, our Government, the laws of the State of Florida and our Constitution in general.

Thank you for supporting me and God Bless America

I shudder to think what would happen if a suicidal terrorist or crazed criminal walked in with weapons concealed into the park. How quickly would he (or she) would be brought down? The same scenario applies to all other no-gun zones. Criminals do NOT obey laws! Feel good gun bans only make you less safe.

The security Guards at the front of the Parks are going through every peace of what ever you have in your bag at one time my wifes feminen products where pulled out in front of millions of people and the Guard was a rediculous smart mouth... But my knife in my pocket was with me on every ride possable even the Pirates rrrrrrrr.... Until this Liberal movement stops My family and I will no longer support them and we will spend are lump some of money saved for Vacationing at Disney will be spend on new Guns and vacationing some place more Conservative..... I plan on to continue to teach my Family its ok to protect them selves and its ok to be against homosexuality that Disney promotes....
It occurs to me that if Disney is found to be in knowing violation of existing or new laws, Disney should be criminally prosecuted, not just told "you can't" and allowed to "walt"z away (sorry, that just happened somehow).

As usual these crazy liberals have missed the entire point of this law and have twisted it to serve their own agenda. The real point of this issue is two parts. Under the law me and any other concealed weapons permits (CWP) carrier have the right under the Castle Doctrine to protect our selves and our property traveling to and from our place of work. I, just as many others, do not have the right to carry my firearm into my place of employment. I must leave it in my car. But, I do have the right to protect myself as a travel to and from there. This is the issue that we “Gun Toting”, Second Amendment supporting, NRA members have a problem with…They are trying to suppress my basic Constitutional Right to protect myself and my family.

You see under the Florida Castle Doctrine, my car is an extension of my home, which I have the right to protect and defend. The new law allows me as a law abiding citizen and CWP carrier to have a gun with me in public places. That includes the Disney parking lot. Look, no one in there right mind wants to take a loaded gun into the park. But, I feel I have the right to protect myself as I travel to and from!

Disney has twisted this into there own agenda and they are using it as a platform to suppress my right and the rights of there employees, by trying to operate above the law. I don’t think I will be renewing my season passes this year. I applauded SeaWorld for their guts to stand behind the law. Looks like that’s where I will get seasons passes next year. Guns have helped to make this country free and they are what help to keep it free. God help us all!
