To give bronze a dark patina, Conte uses two acids: ferric nitrate for a deep red and potassium sulfide for a deep, dark brown. But first he torches the bronze, heating the skulls’ surfaces so they will absorb their acid treatment. The resulting bronze skull may look old, but it’s still technologically advanced beyond any skull in the real world—and certainly more durable.
