Correction to the article: KITT was in fact obeying orders when he hacked "Roamstar" to free Michael.

In the leadup to this scene, federal agents arrested Michael. KITT allowed them to do so and for them to also tow him, so as not to blow their cover (ie: the highly advanced, bullet-proof, transforming, talking sports car). Sarah, who is basically both KITT and Michael's "boss" had to talk KITT into breaking Michael out, as it would be easier to cover up his breakout while he was en-route, rather than trying to bust him out of a prison once he'd been processed.

KITT exhibits more autonomy and creativity (no doubt as a result of the reduced cast in the series), however he still does so in order to fulfill the orders he's been given.

Loved this episode. My new truck has the 2009 version of OnStar and it has a new feature that allows them to slow the vehicle down if it is stolen so that the cops can catch the thief. It isn't remote control, but it seems like it is on its way!
