Why can't this teleportation technology be used to make copies of things, even humans? What is essentially used is the information about the states of various particles in a thing. Why should the thing be disintegrated to obtain this information?

@Nate

You're touching on a real philosophical debate here, which also goes to the foundation of what it means to have a sense of "I exist," or what it might mean for a machine to have an "I". But here's another log on the fire -- your body is constantly being renewed and rebuilt from what you eat. 98 per cent of the atoms is your body are replaced over the course of a year, and I believe that sooner or later virtually all get replaced several times over a lifetime. Are you then a different soul to the person who walked around a few years ago with your name and face? NPR had a piece on this fascinating idea:

As far as this teleportation of people business is concerned, I've got philosophical/religious problems with accepting that the person that resembles me in every way that appears somewhere else is really me. They may have every physical attribute that I have and all the same memories, but that person isn't me. In effect, I have died so that a perfect copy of me can occupy a different position in space. The ethical concerns with cloning are nothing in comparison to this teleportation problem.

I recently read an trilogy (Probability series) from SF author Nancy Kress where their existed an a very old network of "space tunnels" that appeared to operate similarly to what is described above. Excellent book series!

BTW: Your Captcha's are really unreadable, even using a magnifier app. Do you really have to make them this hard? Couldn't you ask a question instead, like what is the sum of x+y or ID a photo of some animal?
