I hate to break it to you guys, but Kevin Warwick is a bit of a joke here in Europe. He's a tireless and passionate self-publicist who first started describing himself as the world's first cyborg when he had an RFID chip popped into his arm so he could swipe campus security doors without a card.

Any panel that has invited him to talk on anything has clearly failed to do any research beyond googling 'robotics'.

He's also never had anything spliced into his brain.

I was the World Science Festival producer on the Battlestar Galactica event held last Friday at the 92nd St Y. I'd like to offer some corrections as there are a number of inaccuracies in the post in Discover's blog above.

Kevin Warwick and Hod Lipson are both world authorities on robots and cybernetics. However neither of their work was explicitly an inspiration for Battlestar Galactica. Rather last Friday's program sought to tease out real world science -- like Lipson's evolutionary robotics -- from a popular culture phenomenon.

Kevin Warwick did not have a chip put in his brain. He did however have a chip temporarily inserted into the his arm in order to further explore the interface of man and machine. His work on implants is primarily geared towards biomedical engineering.
