fortunately, inception is not a documentary, it's a movie, and it is supposed to be entertaining, and it is... I loved it. And it's the type of movie that allows you to walk out of the theather and engage in interesting discussions with your friends and family.

I haven't seen Inception, but everything I have seen about it - trailers, unofficial guides, reviews, spoiler descriptions - tells me that it is absolute rubbish top to bottom in terms of actual dreams, the unconscious, psychology, and neurophysiology. It is totally bogus as neuroscience. The way dream levels interact with each other, the precise differential passage of time on levels (you can spend weeks, months, and years in a dream state? Does neuronal activity speed up to allow that? Impossible.), kicking up to higher levels, physics mirroring the real world (the excuse is that the architect is designing the dreams - is she designing physics too?).

And it is one of the least imaginative portrayals of the unconscious ever put on film. Nolan doesn't seem to understand the difference between the unconscious and virtual reality.

What Inception is really about is a set of arbitrary rules for Michael Bay/James Bond capers - rules that keep getting elaborated during the copious exposition in the film. Just like, as the blogger at Cultural Minefield put it, a game of Calvinball (Calvin and Hobbes' game in which rules kept being made up during play). And the subplot is Solaris all over again. Or maybe Inception is a coincidental sequel to Shutter Island.

If they tried to break into The Batman's dreams, Inception would have been called Watch Leonardo DiCaprio Get Beat into a Coma.
