Study concludes that conservative politicians are more physically attractive.

It’s been known for a while that people (or at least men) tend to vote for more attractive political candidates. Not only that, but a previous study found that Republicans and Democrats can be differentiated from their faces. Well, this study brings those results together, reporting that conservative politicians tend to be more attractive, and that voters presented with an unfamiliar candidate use attractiveness level to gauge conservatism. Why are beautiful people more conservative (or vice versa)? According to the researchers, “Our explanation is that beautiful people earn more, which makes them less inclined to support redistribution.” We’re not sure how this explains Trump, but we assume there are plenty of ongoing studies aiming to do just that.

The right look: Conservative politicians look better and voters reward it

“Since good-looking politicians win more votes, a beauty advantage for politicians on the left or on the right is bound to have political consequences. We show that politicians on the right look more beautiful in Europe, the United States and Australia. Our explanation is that beautiful people earn more, which makes them less inclined to support redistribution.
Our model of within-party competition predicts that voters use beauty as a cue for conservatism when they do not know much about candidates and that politicians on the right benefit more from beauty in low-information elections. Evidence from real and experimental elections confirms both predictions.”

Maybe that explains the boom in cosmetic surgery for some of our most popular politicians and entertainers.

John Kerry, Barbara Boxer, Diane Feinstein, Hillary and Bill Clinton come to mind!

And don’t even mention the Hollywood crowd! :)

    • Dog Gone

And your evidence for this claimed cosmetic surgery is?

Zip. More right wing fake facts/news.

      • OWilson

        You’re kidding, right? :)

      Don’t forget “Stretch” (Nancy Pelosi).

      • OWilson

If she ever had it she should sue for damages!’

        Obviously botched :)

        • Foodmantoo

Sure she’s had it. Watch her when she smiles–her shoulders go up.

  • Kenneth Ashe

Interesting article. I would have thought it was a 50/50 split.

  • Uncle Al

Repeal the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution to get things back on track. The 3/5’s rule was empirically well placed.

Don’t let Nancy Pelosi near your brain. Feed her Progressive heads so she starves to death with a full stomach. Wait…work in progress!

    • Dog Gone

How about we just repeal you, for the crime of being stupid?

      • Uncle Al

Preening academic intellectual vacuity says “being illiterate, innumerate, and borderline retarded is Authenticity.” The unabled maximize self-esteem to be credible – effectively selecting for the deluded, hence government.

Did you work hard on that word salad, or does being unintelligible just come naturally to you?

I don’t care how conservatives look. Their thoughts though are beautiful.
Poor logic, dishonesty, and hysteria are ugly, so I pity leftists.

        • Dog Gone

Aw, KyzerS, I pity you. Conned-servatives do not have “beautiful thoughts”, they have consistently ugly and bigoted beliefs which are both factually false and lack rigorous logic. Racism, religious extremism are just two examples. A failure to grasp the fundamentals of economics, in the right’s support of trickle down economics would be another example.
You have clearly demonstrated that here.
Don’t pity leftists, you should learn from them.
Simple fact checking demonstrates the failure of the right.
Bigotry is defined by two qualities, a broadly demeaning belief that is factually inaccurate.
          You have demonstrated both.

Yawning is the body’s response to needing more oxygen.
CLEARLY that is true of your brain. So, by all means yawn.
You might not only let in some much needed oxygen, but some new and better ideas and facts.

How does it feel to be one of the beautiful people?

  • jhertzli

Wait a moment… Whatever happened to “Politics is show biz for ugly people”?

Those were the days when the Democrat party was top dog, forcing every thing down the throats of the rest of the country. Hopefully, those days are gone for at least 1,000 years.

  • Hard

    And they used Palin?

  • Hard

Trump certainly goes against the grain with his orange skin, gross hand movements fat ugly body and best of all a really weird hairdo

    • Uncle Al

Dare you throw Trump to the the wolves, he returns leading the pack. The Oval Office has not been so fulgent since Teddy Roosevelt pried loose Panama from Colombia and dug an east-west ditch for US convenience.

Trump is the transcendent President, eight years of America Imperator, the remaking of the world. Lucky world! Embrace and rise to the opportunity. Render the Media responsible again.

As for the congenitally inconsequential…go away. We divorce you, we divorce you, we divorce you. Reality is in charge now, merciless and perfect in every way. Go away.

The adults are finally coming in.

It’s a little annoying to see the remaining children actually interviewing them for the job.

As if they were still in charge :)

And, like the children they are, awarding themselves medals, just like Hollywood does! :)

See my comment above, and stay away from the pickle jar for a while.

  • KyzerS

Well, our mothers used to say, don’t frown you face will grow that way.
    Thanks mom.
Conservatives fight their demons inside and succeed. Leftist think their demons are outside, so they fail, thus, their expression.

The reason conservatives are “more attractive” doesn’t take science to figure out. It’s not about making money and hating socialism. It’s about over all attitude towards life, reality and other people. It’s been said that “attitude determines your altitude” .. well.. it also helps determine overall happiness, health and appearance.

If your attitude keeps you smiling, you’re probably going to be a lot healthier than if your attitude convinces people you may have been weaned on a pickle. Also, if you have the attitude about life that suggest you were weaned on a pickle, then there’s no surprise that the older you get the more you’re going to look like a pickle.

  • BlackBart41

I’ve always had the impression that I could detect a Republican versus a Democrat by appearance, but not whether they were attractive or not. As with dogs, those with round relatively flat faces versus narrow more wolf-like faces can be a sign of their nature….non-aggressive, non-threatening versus aggressive and threatening.
An example: compare the faces of Newt Gingrich and John Podesta.
I’ll let you figure out which is which.

  • Darla R. Hitchcock

Bullshit! May I just say Mitch McConnell? Ewwwwww. Not to mention that Obama is handsome and Bush looked like Alfred E. Neuman. The picture above of Palin makes her look like a mental patient, and then we must talk about Crypt-keeper Barbie, errr, I mean KellyAnne Conway. Barbara Boxer is gorgeous, so is Pelosi.
Honestly, I can’t stand the way conservative men look. They look like a combination of Preachers, child-molesters and serial killers; and the women all seem to have Adam’s Apples.
However, the reality of this is, that if you’re voting for people because of how they look and not what they stand for, then you probably shouldn’t be voting!

    • Kate K

You are anti-science with your anecdote based response.

And conservative voters themselves tend to be more attractive, because, as the study notes, the prior peer reviewed work all shows good looking, healthier and more athletic people earn more and tend to be more conservative in their politics

  • j2saret

Well then balance is maintained because their policies are less attractive.

  • Doug Nusbaum

And now a note for conservatives: Conservative: a person who is averse to change and holds to traditional values and attitudes, typically in relation to politics.

Now since conservatives live in their own alternative universe which is a large part humpty dumpty:

‘When I use a word,’ Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, ‘it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.’
‘The question is,’ said Alice, ‘whether you can make words mean so many different things.’
‘The question is,’ said Humpty Dumpty, ‘which is to be master — that’s all.’

They will try and tell you that conservative means small government. But if you look at the history of conservatives running this country then you will quickly conclude that when they say that, they are revealing themselves to be some combination of stupid, ignorant and dishonest.

And speaking of stupid, Here is a definition that comes very close to being synonymous to conservative: Someone unwilling or unable to learn new stuff, unless it comes from an authority figure. That is a stupid person can not learn on his own. Now I ask, how can a person who is adverse to change possibly learn new stuff? You know — like gays or atheists are not untrustworthy or pedophiles? Hence a very large overlap between conservatives and stupid people.

and I do not care if you are a rocket scientist. Those rocket scientists that launched and destroyed the columbia, having learned nothing from the challenger, were stupid. Cause they learned nothing.

    • Kate K

Liberal voters tend to be more rigid. Is that a surprise?

  • tommyt

My interpretation of this is simply that conservatives are more concerned with appearance, while progressives look beyond that and reward intelligence and ability.
