Astronaut Undies & Other Space Oddities

You too can own a bit of space history, but you'll have to be ready to pony up some cash. This gallery is a sampling of some of the space goods that have been auctioned at Swann Auction Galleries and Sotheby's. "Bravely to the Stars / No Obstacles for Heroism," is a color lithographic poster showing cosmonaut in red within red text forming the outline of a rocket ship, Moscow, 1968. Sold for $510. Courtesy Swann Auction Galleries.Staring into the mysteries of matter is all well and good, but don't try it without a clean pair of underwear. The catalogue describes: "In-Flight Sleep Shorts, a pair of light blue sleep shorts of the same type as that used in space for shuttle missions." The shorts sold for $390. Courtesy Swann Auction Galleries"The Atom, for Work, for Service, Peace & Progress," a color lithographic poster showing a Russian scientist examining the model of an atom as a rocket behind him races toward the moon, Moscow, 1955. Sold for $2,640. Courtesy Swann Auction Galleries.Even if riding in a rocket into outer space doesn't scare you, this will: Two waste management systems: a prototype collector for women flown on board the Vostok 6 and a space toilet from Soyuz 3. Both sold for $11,500. Courtesy Sotheby's.Going to space is no reason to abandon hygiene. You may have trod upon the moon, but you still have to brush your teeth. Flown Apollo 11 Toothbrush and Storage Sleeve, one of only two taken to the lunar surface during the first lunar landing, Lactona for NASA, 1969, with a Typed Letter Signed by Buzz Aldrin. Sold for $18,400. Courtesy Swann Auction Galleries.

[...] The other one is a space toilet that went to orbit in the Soyuz 3. I know. Both look scary, unlike today’s top-of-the-line NASA toilets. But then again, this was the Soviet Union’s space program, where many cosmonauts died for engineering and manufacturing problems—and nobody ever knew about them. [Discovery] [...]

Imaginaos lo frío que tenía que estar eso. Peor que los de los hopitales. — Javier G. Pereda [Discovery] [...]
