Gallery | Cassini-Pics | A Cartoon Moon
Mimas, one of Saturn's innermost moons, was another of Cassini's targets--which is fitting because Mimas looks rather like a bulls-eye, thanks to the huge circular crater on its surface. And the pictures and data Cassini sent back delighted fans of Pac-Man everywhere.
This colorful photo shows the predicted and actual temperatures on Mimas' surface, recorded by Cassini over the course of about an hour and a half. The reason for such a variation between the expected temperatures (shown in the top left photo) and actual temperatures (top right photo) remains mysterious. At -290 degrees Fahrenheit, or 92 Kelvin, even the warmest temperatures on Mimas are pretty chilly.
